History
The city of Coimbatore is one of the largest cities in
Tamil Nadu and is situated on the banks of the river
Noyyal. Coimbatore is the city is the Headquarters of the
District and the third largest city in Tamil Nadu. As it
is exposed to the Palghat gap of Western Ghats it enjoys a
salubrious climate. The history of Coimbatore dates back
to earlier than 2nd century AD, when it was called
Kongunad, a small tribal village. In the following
centuries it was brought under Chola control. The name was
later changed by the British to Coimbatore. In Tamil, it
is also known as Kovai.

entrepreneurship hub, particularly in the textile sector.

growing cotton, and this has led to the success of the
textile industry in Coimbatore. The city is a perfect
destination for spending a vacation because of its
wonderful picturesque places. The city has also a large
number of clubs to chill out. The city is well connected
by air, roads and train services. Three National Highways
pass through the city connecting it with other parts of
India. Peelamedu Airport is the nearest airport which is
connected with other states in India by regular domestic
carriers. Besides this, the railway junction at Coimbatore
serves as the major rail head of the city.
This
has attracted a large number of textile mills to this
region. Coimbatore is also known for the manufacture of
motor pumpsets and varied engineering goods. The city is
also known for its handloom products. There are a number
of technical institutions as well.

Culture and Language
